MUSIC
Formed in 2008, Djoukil began as a quintet influenced in the jazz manouche tradition: a style incorporating American swing and traditional European music, and made famous by Django Reinhardt among others. In 2017, following trips to the US during which they were influenced by New Orleans and big band styles, they decided to appropriate the repertoire of both in their original compositions. Now a "Swingtet," Djoukil appeals to dancers of Charleston, Lindy Hop and Balboa within the lively melodies once created by great composer-arrangers such as Fats Waller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many others.

8 pm: Intro to Partner Charleston

We are excited to be teaching an intro to partner Charleston! This fun style of dance is especially suited to dancing to faster tempos. We'll cover the basics and a couple of variations. 1930's Charleston is a great addition to your swing dance repertoire, and pairs well with Lindy and Balboa. No partner necessary. Come dance with us!

"Core" lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you'll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to "get back to basics" or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

MUSIC
The Big Dixie Swingers are led by a couple of lovers* and a rotating crew of gifted musicians around the States. Featuring violin, trumpet, clarinet, pedal steel and more, their sound marries a lifelong love of pre-war music with a childhood exposure to trashy 30's and 40's musicals and popular songs. We call it western swing, but it's the swing of New Orleans and the Appalachians, the swing of small bars and hot nights- heavy rhythm, heavy syncopation, a fresh clash of sound for social aid and pleasure. https://bigdixieswingers.bandcamp.com/

MUSIC
The Low-Down Sires have been busy reviving rare early 20th century jazz classics for the past five years, and are known and respected widely as true traditionalists. Consistently hailed as one of the most popular dance bands in the region, the Sires have had the pleasure of performing at events all over the eastern US, in addition to their regular circuit of local swing dances, club appearances, and private parties. Dedicated to the lost sounds of the earliest roots of jazz, and inspired by the compositions and arrangements of King Oliver, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and other giants from the storied origins of the art form, their authentic sound transports listeners to the streets of Old New Orleans and the barrelhouses of early 20th century Mississippi river towns. Their hot swingin' style is a surefire hit with audiences everywhere, from concert halls, bars and back-porches, to swing dances and street corners.

CLASSES
7pm: Swing Outs w/ Jean & Carolina

It’s everyone’s favorite lindy hop staple, the swing out. Whether you think you know enough already, or you’ve seen people swinging out on the dance floor and want to give it a shot, this is the class for you. We will work on the fundamentals of the swing out, break it down and piece it back together, and finish off with some fun variations. For this class, you should be very comfortable with basic 8-count footwork and connection, but don’t worry about bringing a partner. We will rotate throughout the class to give everyone a lot of practice.

“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************

8 pm: Charleston/Jitterbug w/ Jean & Karolina

This month we will be doing beginner partnered Charleston, which is perfect for faster songs and a great way to start dancing. Focusing mostly on side-by-side 30s style, we will also add in some jitterbug steps and turns to give your dancing a little more variety and swing. No partner necessary! You’ll get to dance with everyone.

“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Bahamas Benefit Bash

The Big Benefit Band and The BLOCK Off Biltmore are joining forces to raise funds for GreaterGood.org's relief efforts. Come enjoy live music and a silent auction while helping our friends in the Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Bahamas Sunday as a powerful Category 5 Hurricane, triggering massive flooding that left entire neighborhoods underwater. Maximum sustained winds reached 185 mph with gusts up to 220, making Dorian one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record. Early reports reveal unprecedented, catastrophic damage with as many as 13,000 homes destroyed.

GreaterGood.org is working with partners on the ground to deliver emergency supplies, transport, and medical care to animals and humans affected by this monster storm. Will you donate today to give the Bahamas a fighting chance at survival?
